Intimate Partner Abuse of Older Adults

Introduction

Signs of abuse in older populations can be similar to those seen in younger people or they may be unique to the struggles elders face.  For example, an intimate partner may be mismanaging their partner’s money, forging or altering legal documents, over-medicating or not giving medications, and interfering with their care.  While it can be hard to decide if someone is the victim of abuse or what to do once you suspect an older person is being maltreated, there are services and information that can help.  Inside you’ll find a brochure you can provide to older adults who may be victims of abuse, a Desk Reference for professionals to screen for and report abuse, and a Power and Control Wheel to help you identify tactics of abuse of elders.
