Where to Get New York State Domestic Violence Laws

If you would like more information about a new law, or would like to read the actual language of the law, there are several resources you can use.

Search by bill number or chapter number:

You can search on the website of the New York State Legislature for bills introduced or signed into law since 1995.

Use the Assembly (A.) or Senate (S.) bill number, or the chapter number, and the year the bill was signed into law.

For example:

Domestic Violence/Custody Factor  (A.2446-C Weinstein/S.7403-B Saland)

Amends the Family Court Act and Domestic Relations Law,  requiring judges to consider the effect of domestic violence in assessing the best interests of a child, or children, when making custody and visitation determinations.

Effective: September 28, 1999

Amends: Domestic Relations Law §240(1)

Family Court Act §§447(a); 467(c); 549(1); 651; 652(c)

Search by chapter number for additional information about a law:

The New York State Library has all chapter laws from 1995 available on-line.* A “bill jacket” is compiled for each bill that is signed into law (or vetoed). The bill jacket contains a brief summary, text of the bill and supporting memo. It also contains all of the correspondence the Governor received while considering whether to sign or veto the bill. To locate a new law by this method, you must use the year the bill was signed into law and the chapter number.
